recap of the blue-cloud hackathon
Directing an Open Science Hackathon for the Future of the Ocean
When a European Open Science initiative needs to prove that its data platform can actually be used by the people it was built for, a traditional conference isn’t enough. As Kreativdistrikt, our mission for the Blue-Cloud Hackathon was to turn a marine-data infrastructure into a live, hands-on challenge: put Blue-Cloud in front of real scientists, developers, and innovators, and see what they could build with it in three days.
Organized in partnership with the Blue-Cloud project — an EU-backed Open Science platform for the marine domain — and its network of research partners, the hackathon, themed “Decode the Ocean,” brought together marine scientists, data scientists, ICT experts, and students under the banner “Decode the Ocean.” Here is how we structured, facilitated, and delivered it.
The Challenge: Making an Open Science Platform Prove Its Value
Blue-Cloud gives researchers a wealth of ocean data, analytical tools, and computing power, but a platform is only as valuable as what people build with it. Kreativdistrikt’s operational objective was to design a hackathon format that would get a mixed audience of marine researchers and technologists to actually build working proofs of concept on top of Blue-Cloud, aimed at improving knowledge of marine ecosystems, supporting the transition to a greener blue economy, advancing Ocean literacy, and enhancing international collaboration toward the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Four Challenge Tracks, Built With Domain Experts
To keep the challenges grounded in real marine-science problems, Kreativdistrikt worked with the Blue-Cloud partner network to design four tracks:
Understanding the Ocean.
Using collaborative science to map plankton diversity and tap environmental and molecular data — plankton alone is estimated to produce 50% of the planet’s oxygen, yet remains difficult to analyze at scale.
Feeding the World.
Balancing the Ocean’s role in feeding a growing population with the environmental risks of aquaculture, from assessing cage-level environmental impact to maximizing food return while minimizing risk.
Predicting Environmental Risks.
Building early-warning tools for climate-driven changes in marine ecosystems, so mitigation and adaptation decisions can happen before damage is done rather than after.
Wild Card: Hack the Blue-Cloud.
An open track for any solution that advances Ocean knowledge, the blue economy, Ocean literacy, or international cooperation using the platform.
The Kreativdistrikt Methodology: From Ideation to Pitch
Running a technical hackathon for a mixed audience of scientists and developers, fully virtual, required a structured, multi-phase format:
- 3-Week Virtual Ideation Warm-Up: A self-paced onboarding period where participants got familiar with Blue-Cloud’s services and tools, formed teams, and shaped the idea they would build during the hackathon.
- 3-Day Live Hackathon: Teams worked directly with Blue-Cloud mentors to turn their idea into a working proof of concept over three intensive days.
- Pitch & Award Event: Teams delivered video pitches, fielded live Q&A from judges, and winners were selected through a combination of expert judging and a popular participant vote for the “Blue Skies” award.
Expert-Led Evaluation
A defining feature of the event was the caliber of its judging panel, drawn directly from the marine science and Open Science community: representatives from CNR (Italy’s National Research Council), the European Environment Agency, Bangor University, Deltares, NORCE, D4Science/CNR-ISTI, and the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance, among others. Kreativdistrikt managed the full evaluation workflow, from coordinating judge availability to scoring criteria to the live pitch event itself.

Tangible Impact: Prizes and Follow-Through
The hackathon was designed to welcome 60-100 participants across 6 to 10 teams, competing for a prize structure built around long-term impact rather than a one-off payout:
- Three cash prizes of €25,000, €20,000, and €15,000, earmarked specifically for further evolving and scaling the winning solution — not just prize money, but continued development funding.
- Coaching sessions for each winning team to guide the evolution of their solution post-event.
- Travel funding for up to two members of each winning team to present at the Blue-Cloud Final Conference.
- A “Blue Skies” award, decided by popular vote of participants at the Pitch & Award Event, also carrying conference travel funding.
What Our Partner Said
“The Blue-Cloud Hackathon exceeded our expectations in terms of user engagement, uptake, and feedback on the digital assets and services developed by the Blue-Cloud project. It has also been a great lever to expand the Blue-Cloud community. Credit is due to Kreativdistrikt for designing a very effective outreach campaign and for their support and contribution to a well-planned and sharply executed event. They have been an outstanding Partner to the hackathon, adapting to our evolving needs and expectations with professionalism, determination, and an uplifting Team spirit.”
