Sparking the Hydrogen Revolution: A Recap of the Hydrogen HiveMinds Ideathon
In the race toward a carbon-neutral Europe, hydrogen is more than just a molecule; it is a cornerstone of the energy transition. But moving from laboratory research to a national roadmap requires more than just science; it requires radical collaboration and visionary thinking.
This was the driving force behind the Hydrogen HiveMinds Ideathon, a high-impact initiative designed and executed by Kreativdistrikt for the BE-HyFE project (funded by the Belgian federal FPS Economy). Held over 72 intensive hours at Silversquare Bailli in Brussels, the event transformed the way Belgium’s leading academic researchers approach the country’s hydrogen ecosystem.
A Mission-Driven Ideathon: Beyond the Lab
While typical academic conferences focus on presenting past results, Kreativdistrikt designed Hydrogen HiveMinds to focus on co-creating the future
Our goal was clear: to move beyond theoretical papers and produce Future Pathways—plausible, coherent routes for Belgium’s hydrogen landscape from today until 2050

From “Warm-up” to “Pitch”
Success in a 72-hour sprint doesn’t happen by accident. Kreativdistrikt applied its signature event-management framework to ensure maximum output and engagement:
The Warm-up Phase
Before arriving in Brussels, we hosted strategic webinars and provided a curated “Starter Kit” to equip participants with the technical and non-technical context needed to hit the ground running.
Structured Ideation
During the 3-day live event, we guided teams through a rigorous Pathway Framework. Our moderators helped researchers translate technical “signals” into visionary “intents” and actionable “interventions”.
Industry Mentorship
We bridged the gap between academia and the real world by bringing in experts from industry giants like Agfa, Fluxys, and Solhyd. These mentors pressure-tested the teams’ ideas, ensuring that the proposed solutions were not only ambitious but feasible in a competitive market.
Shaping the Belgian Roadmap
The energy in the room was electric as teams tackled three critical tracks:
Hydrogen as Energy Carrier: Focused on energy system integration.
Hydrogen as Industrial Feedstock: Centred on demand creation and market uptake.
Hydrogen as a Boost for Competitiveness: Targeted at technological leadership and innovation acceleration
